FAQ
Frequently Asked (Roofing) Questions
How much does it cost to replace a roof?
It depends on many factors. Re-roofing quotes are typically based on a per square basis (one roofing square is 100 square feet). A price will reflect the necessary components of each individual roof. These may include the number of layers to be removed, whether new decking / sheathing is needed, how steep and cut-up a roof is and what grade or type of material is used when re-roofing.
How long does it take to replace a roof?
A basic re-cover on a small roof could be completed in as little as 1-2 days. A thorough re-roof with removal, decking and replacement could take approximately a week for an average size residence
What is ice and water shield?
It is a waterproofing membrane that keeps moisture from getting under the shingles from ice damming and creep. The ice and water shield is installed along the eaves and around chimneys, swamp cooler duct and any other roof penetration
Do dark colors affect heat build-up in the attic and house in the summertime?
Naturally, darker colors absorb more light and heat than lighter colors. However, with the installation of proper attic ventilation, the heat can escape from the attic space. The manufacturer material warranties require that adequate attic ventilation be a part of any re-roofing project where there is a ventable space.
Can existing rain gutters be reused when re-roofing?
Yes and No. Some roof configurations will not require new rain gutter, but the dimension of some roofs, such as hip framed roofs, or roofs with a cedar shingle starter will decrease in size when the existing roofing material is removed and disposed of.

An ice dam is the build up of ice at the eave of the roof which holds back melting snow. This dammed up water will back up underneath the shingles and work its way into the living space. This will cause expensive interior damages to your home.
Drip Edge
Metal edge flashing that is installed at eaves and gable ends. The drip edge protects the underlying structure. The drip edge is installed over new decking and is sandwiched between the decking and ice and water shield.
Ice and water shield
A self adhering rubberized asphalt sheet membrane to help prevent leaks and damage from ice damming and wind driven rain.
Felt paper; 15, 30-lb.
